When Is an AC Failure an Emergency?

Not every AC problem is an emergency, but these are:

  • No cooling, outdoor temperature 90°F+. Indoor temperature is climbing fast.
  • Electrical burning smell from the air handler or condenser. Shut the system off at the breaker and call.
  • Water leaking from the indoor unit onto flooring, drywall, or ceilings. Risk of damage compounds quickly.
  • Frozen evaporator coil with the system still running. Risk of compressor damage.
  • AC failure with a medically vulnerable household member, infant, elderly resident, or pet. Heat stress is real.

If you are unsure, call 817-725-9234 and the dispatcher will triage on the phone.

Our Emergency AC Repair Process

  1. Call 817-725-9234. Our dispatcher answers and asks a short set of triage questions: what is the system doing, what is the indoor temperature, are there any safety concerns.
  2. We dispatch from Lewisville. For Lewisville, Flower Mound, Carrollton, and Lake Dallas this is typically the fastest response in DFW.
  3. Diagnostic on site. The technician confirms the failure (refrigerant pressures, capacitor microfarads, electrical, airflow), explains what they found, and quotes the repair in writing before doing the work.
  4. Repair or stabilize. Most common parts (capacitors, contactors, condenser fan motors) are on the truck. If a part has to be ordered, we discuss interim options.
  5. System test and follow-up. We verify performance (supply/return temperature split, refrigerant pressures, airflow) before leaving.

Common AC Failures We Fix

Failed capacitor. The most common summer call. The capacitor stores the boost charge that starts the compressor and condenser fan motor. Heat fatigue kills them. Symptoms: humming outdoor unit with no fan spin, or system that runs briefly and shuts off. Fast repair, parts on truck.

Burned contactor. The relay that closes the high-voltage circuit to the condenser. Symptoms: outdoor unit will not start even though the indoor blower runs. Replacement is straightforward.

Frozen evaporator coil. Usually caused by restricted airflow (clogged filter, dirty coil, blower issue) or low refrigerant. We shut the system off, thaw the coil, find the root cause, and repair.

Compressor failure. The worst-case repair on an older system. We diagnose with an amp clamp and ohmmeter and discuss repair-vs-replace at this point - on systems 10+ years old, replacement usually pencils out better.

Refrigerant leak. Visible oil on coil fins, hissing at the line set, or system that needs frequent recharge. We locate the leak (electronic detector or dye), repair if accessible, and recharge to manufacturer spec.
